As modernist architects freed themselves of vernacular architecture and developed a homogenized international style, many areas and sterile places created out of touch with the heat decorative historical forms of human inhabitation. Negative reactions to the brutality of modernist spaces encouraged architectural movements such as postmodernism and deconstructionism, but they never managed to usurp rational modernist box as an architectural dominant paradigm.

However, as for precision machine these buildings often become unintentionally humanized over time, with the addition of curtains, coloring, or even through failure imperfect and accidental repairs or modifications. I think building on the successes and failures of modernism gave birth to a new and previously unclassified architectural style: Pixelism. Find out what this new phenomenon is after the break.

Rise of Modernism

In a world swept by change from manual labor to modern industry and the aftermath of the Second World War, architects were working in a new cultural environment - and with a range of updated materials and construction techniques to match. iconic figures such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe were influenced by industrial processes and new materials such as steel and reinforced concrete to create a modern architectural style

L a well-known products. modern, large-scale public housing projects like Pruitt-Igoe in St. Louis, are often cited as a failure of the stylistic period. Large dark developments often created unpleasant environments (and even dangerous) due to a sense of alienation that large homogeneous developments caused. When several of these projects have failed were demolished, customization residents within compartmentalization units was exposed - the physical manifestation of the human being needs to differentiate. One such example was observed after the demolition of the Rabot towers in Belgium, where the removal of the front panels unveiled interiors with bright colors, creating a kind of abstract art.

responses to modernism

There were a number of architectural stylistic movements that avoided the brutal modernism: all of first and most notoriously, exaggerated gestures historically inspired formal postmodernists, who have sought to evoke the grandeur and humanity of classical architectural styles as a gesture of defiance against their perception of modernism as bland and soulless.

often insipid performance by the irony of postmodern architectural style rebellion motivated a later generation of architects to create the architectural compositions of deconstructionism dismantled and amorphous forms of blobitecture. These structures are able to recreate the ornamental style of classical building (something avoided by modernist theory) in a contemporary vocabulary.

Pixelism: pass the modernism

However, none of these stylistic reform efforts never really managed to succeed modernism as a movement dominant aesthetic in architecture, with the mutated offspring of modernism continues to subtly permeate the ground. Many benefits of modernism, such as efficiency and structural purity (form follows function), are always convincing in a contemporary architectural context. But the architects had to find a way to anthropomorphize these rational structures to avoid the alienation that modernism had often done in the past.

The current generation of architects is obsessed with the difference, albeit in a largely modernist underlying framework, and contemporary architectural paradigm develops the basic concepts of the modernist theory mutational rather than a reactionary style. Architects have begun to harness the power of seemingly random, yet abstractions curated as a way to convey information, identity and individuality

the continuous masses and oppression mesh modernist structures become a celebration of difference and texture. Deviance suddenly become integrated without showing subjection and monotony idealistic - but ultimately without charm - town planning of Le Corbusier and Hilberseimer are distorted to promote the difference, although the underlying constitution remains similar. Pixelism, although based on modernism, embracing heterogeneity, rather than hiding the contents of a diverse urban civilization behind facades and stuffy and homogeneous plans.

Our civilization is currently undergoing a radical change in the same proportions to the industrial revolution which created a new cultural ecosystem in which modernist architecture was created - in a digital world with exponential development of technology. Pixelism outlines what architecture (or city) would look like if we, as architects, really start moving beyond the status quo modernist.
