The light is all around us, and it affects more and more our daily lives. For example, we began to carry personal light sources around with our smartphones and our houses numerous electrical machines now use light to display information and to simply look more attractive. In a broader context, architecture and cities have also developed a new dimension with the advent of electric lighting for work and entertainment.
Inspired by the central role of light in our culture and technology, the United Nations proclaimed 2015 "International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies" (IYL2015). with IYL2015 UN wants to raise awareness of the importance of optical technologies in our lives, our future and the development of society and light.

The light is a key element of the architecture. For centuries, the sun was mainly used to simply enlighten stone facades, but glass has opened a path for interior spaces with increased brightness and a sense of openness. With the introduction of electric light and sophisticated optical technology engineers sought ways to copy the qualities of natural light, a diffuse lighting emphasis. They were driven by the vision to create an inviting atmosphere in buildings and improve life in the workplace. With the rapid innovation of lamps with increased light output, we have already moved to the point where to avoid glare is as relevant as the light itself.
Thanks to modern LED technology we have an element where tiny software driven pixels can be integrated flexibly in furniture, interior surfaces or even the facades of buildings, change their intensity and dynamic color. And construction surfaces began to turn into media self-luminous elements for aesthetic or commercial narration. A commercial crucibles flickering light of experiences like Times Square in New York, we can grasp the idea of living in dynamic displays that never rest.
The light is often taken for granted and that his absence we become aware of the global influence of the lighting. With Hurricane Sandy in 2012 the lights suddenly blackened and occupied lower Manhattan fell in the evening silence. non-functioning street and traffic lights issued the public in the dark. Only the headlights of some cars have made hasty moments of brightness in the empty streets, and people in the apartments turned to candles and received an impression of how life was before electric lighting colonized night.
because of the abundance of light today, we have lost the beauty of the night in many places of the world . The particles in the air that reflect urban light emissions reduce the opportunity to enjoy the stars at night. Not only this "sky glow" affects people, particularly astronomers, but also affects other organisms, such as birds that are oriented by stars. Consequently, many groups like Dark Sky Association or the research team "Loss of the Night" have raised public awareness of the ecological effects of outdoor lighting. In addition, medical science have stressed the risk to health than the face for night workers when their circadian rhythms are disrupted.
therefore, more research is needed to understand the dependencies between light and health in order to find adequate responses to contest live and work situations. the broad perspective of IYL2015 ensure that the various dimensions of light, culture, technology and energy are included. Sometimes even simple technologies can have a remarkable impact in solving problems: "Liter of light" or "SolarAid" have proven to be effective ways for developing countries to benefit from better light. In the case of "Liter of Light," all that is necessary is an old plastic bottle filled with water and chlorine that refracts sunlight - enough to light a home and easy to do, thanks to Alfredo Moser a group of MIT students.
